Wordpress is not free anymore? Starter,Explorer, Starter plan?

Hey peeps, it came to my attention that WordPress is not free anymore. I started back in 2017 when Babiato used to have a Black theme and sharing free Netflix accounts through a JSON modification were a big thing, the good old times.

Switching gears, I'm deploying a WP project from scratch and I noticed WordPress requires you to choose between the Starter, Explorer or Creator plan? Therefore I acquired the Starter plan however I noticed I don't have access to install plugins neither to do SFTP.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone here has discovered a way to avoid the extra charges or what strategy has been developed through the times.

It seems you are confusing WordPress.com with WordPress.org. WordPress.org is the free, open-source WordPress software that can be self-hosted without fees. WordPress.com is an Automattic-hosted service that offers free and paid blog plans with limitations.

If you self-host WordPress.org on your own server, there are no costs, account restrictions, or functionality limits. You retain full control to install plugins, switch themes, and use SFTP.
 
Seems like I was not aware about that. Team, what hosting are your top3 or you'd recommend?
