You were right...My problem lay with the theme I was using and not Elementor in itself.

you can have automatic updates yes.. but you must buy it!
it says incompatible archive, I unzipped it and made sure there are no Mac files, but it still says that.

In one of the previously released versions (which you can find in the HISTORY section) there was a folder with the various template kits offered by elemetor.
It seems to me that those could be installed without problems.
Just create a random gmail account, use it to create an account in elementor = get what you need !

Try this:
1. delete Elementor Pro (temporarily)
2. install only the free version
3. redo the onboarding process (ceate and/or (if you already has an elementor account) connect with your domain as @King Kong suggest)
4. Once your domain is connected with free version, install elementor pro again.
