Hello!

I'm thinking to be a freelancer, specifically in web designer. So there are questions in my mind.

  1. How to find a client / potential client at the earlier stage of freelancing with zero portfolio?
  2. How much I should charge to client?
  3. How to stay "alive" in freelancing?

Thank you for all advices.

  1. signup on freelancing sites
  2. develop your own website first which can be used on portfolio.
  3. charge depends on what cms you are using, if custom made or template, charge with what you already have available. also it depends on what the client can pay. i have seen some who couldn't even pay $100. for a good website.
  4. promote your services if you haven't landed a client yet.
5.keep the service clean and professional.

Hi amiradamt, you could try the following:

Competetive & Requires lots of work.

https://www.fiverr.com/
https://99designs.com/

the website design niche today is extremely competitive, if you do a search on google you will se many ads.
the sites i posted are a way to get around but it requires work.

Behance & Dribble is another place for designers. You could get real $$$ on here and very well payed, however you need to show what you do, designers and agencies will see your skills and hire you.

The best way to get clients is by marketing... Paying for ads on Google, Bing or Yahoo... Google being the top #1...

For this you will need to acquire some marketing skills. because you could be paying %80 of your budget for none relative traffic... however you could call google ads and they will help you do basic customization.... Marketing is the best way, but requires lots of skills.... or you could go broke.

IDK how the market is on Malaysia. The best way to find out is by putting yourself on the shoes of the client... Act like a client and try to find this services on Google or popular sites on your region... The ads that you see is from people paying to get exposure... people pay money to get results.

Get to know the competition.
See how often they appear on searches, and see if they are still appearing weeks after. Why weeks after? If the ads dont drive results people will stop paying.

Contact this sites, fill their forms or get in touch by phone, see how they market their products, see what they offer, then see how much you can charge based on that... this way you get skills from people selling. You need this skills because as a designer you also have to be a seller. Yep and customer service etc...

Use all Free listing sites on your region.
Present yourself as an agency purely based online.

This steps or tips could get you started. and don't spend what you don't have, spend what you earn and work and work smart...
