Disable browsing through .htaccess

Hello everyone, I am a bit desperate. Do any of you have a (really) good script to prevent browsing the "wp-content files"?
What I have found so far and written at the very top of the .htaccess does not help.
Would rather not install a plugin for this. I don't like to slow down the loading of my website by too many plugins.

Disabling directory listing does not help? You can find it in your cpanel under apache settings or set this up on your apache config if you are hosting yourself.
